What's new

Every release of the apps and the relay, newest first. Written for people using Flamenet Messenger; the parts that only matter if you run your own relay are at the bottom of each release.

iPhone beta 0.15.0

The first build that runs on iPad.

  • New, iPad, in two columns, with the lists beside the conversation in every orientation.
  • Changed, The Face ID passphrase store is gone from Files and the wallet, and anything it had saved is purged from the keychain the next time the app opens.
  • Fixed, A call nobody answers stops ringing on its own.
  • Fixed, A backup no longer drops replies, stickers, link previews, drafts or story sets.
  • Changed, The call screen offers the key review itself, so a call refused because somebody's keys changed can be dealt with where it failed rather than somewhere else.

android 0.18

A poll nobody can attribute, and a call you can carry to another device.

  • New, Ask a group something without anybody learning how one person voted. A vote is never sent to anybody at all, not to the person asking and not to the server: it is split into random pieces, one per member, and each member publishes only the sum of the pieces they were handed. Adding those sums gives the counts. Everyone has to vote before there is a result, because a missing one leaves a random number in the total rather than a smaller count. Everyone other than the voter would have to work together to know how one person voted, which is what the app says rather than the shorter claim.
  • New, Move a call to another of your own devices. On a call on the phone, walk to the desk, take it there, and keep talking. The other person hears a short gap and nothing else, stays on their call screen, and gets one call in their log rather than two. If no device takes it the call stays exactly where it was.
  • New, On iPhone, Face ID opens Files and the wallet. If the app lock is on, unlocking the app is enough and neither one asks for your passphrase again. With the lock off they ask for it, as before.
  • New, On iPhone, you can ask for your passphrase as well as the lock, separately for messages, Files and the wallet. Off by default, and only offered where the app lock is on, because without the lock there is no first factor for it to be second to.
  • Fixed, Hanging up now stops the ring on the other phone. The end of a call was not treated as time-critical, so a phone that was asleep never woke for it and went on ringing for a caller who had already gone.
  • Fixed, Answering or declining works when several calls arrive at once. A second call could take over the first one on screen, leaving a call nothing could end.
  • Fixed, Calls you missed reach the call log. They were filed in the conversation and nowhere else, so the Calls screen showed outgoing calls alone.
  • Fixed, Setting up Files asks for your passphrase once. It asked twice, which suggested it was a different passphrase from the one you sign in with. It is the same one.
  • Fixed, The sign-in screen shows the app’s own mark instead of a letter in a box.

android 0.17

A reaction can be meant for one person.

  • New, React to one person inside a group. Choose “Just to them” and the emoji goes to whoever wrote the message. Nobody else in the group is sent it, so there is nothing on their phones for anything to find later. The label reads “only you” on their phone and “only them” on yours.
  • New, React during a call. Tap an emoji while somebody is talking and it shows on their screen for a moment, so you can agree without cutting across them. It travels inside the call's own encryption, and nothing about it is saved: when the call ends there is nothing left of it on either phone.
  • New, Hold a conversation off the record. Both phones stop writing it down, so closing the app takes it with them: no file to hand over, nothing in the backup. It takes both phones agreeing, and yours keeps writing until theirs answers that it understood, so a conversation is never off the record on one side and on disk on the other. It cannot stop a screenshot.
  • Fixed, Answering a call on one of your devices stops the others ringing. A second phone signed in to the same account carried on ringing for a full minute after the call had been answered elsewhere, and then filed it as a missed call.

android 0.16

A backup made here opens on an iPhone.

  • Changed, Backups move between Android and iPhone. Until now each app wrote a backup only it could open and turned the other's away, so changing which kind of phone you carry meant starting empty. The same file now opens on either. A backup is still sealed with a passphrase you choose, and it is still the only thing that opens it.
  • Fixed, A file someone sends you keeps its name. It arrived named and then lost the name the next time the app started, along with the label it was filed under, which looked like the file itself had gone wrong rather than the app having forgotten.
  • Fixed, A story that has expired is actually deleted. It stopped being shown at the right time, but the picture stayed on the phone afterwards instead of being thrown away with it.

iPhone beta 0.14.0

Calls on iPhone behave like calls.

  • Changed, The iPhone hands calls to the phone itself now, so they behave the way every other call on it does. Declining from the lock screen actually declines, rather than only silencing this end while the caller goes on listening. Calls you place show up in Recents. And ending one gives the phone back, where before it could be left believing a call was still up and quietly refuse the next one.
  • Changed, When a call will not go through because the other person's security keys changed, it says so where the call failed and lets you settle it there: the safety number to compare is on the screen, and it says what accepting the new keys commits you to. Before, it pointed you at the conversation, which is no help at all if you were calling from the Calls tab or answering a notification.
  • Changed, Backups are written in a shared format, the same one Android will read. Moving a backup between an iPhone and an Android phone does not work yet, because Android still writes only its own; this is the half that had to come first.

If you run your own relay

  • Nothing to do. No relay change is needed for this build.
