A flamenet.io account is not a Flamenet Messenger account. The two sign-ins are separate.

What's new

Every release of the apps and the relay, newest first. Written for people using Flamenet Messenger; the parts that only matter if you run your own relay are at the bottom of each release.

android 0.15

Calls that ring, that answer, and that stop when they are over.

  • Fixed, A call you did not pick up now stops ringing. Before, it rang inside the app forever, and because the notification can be brushed off the top of the screen there was often nothing to show for it. The phone then told everybody who called afterwards that you were busy, while looking perfectly idle to you.
  • Fixed, Calls announce themselves when the app is off screen. Two parts of the app were both reading your mail, and an incoming call went to whichever asked first. When that was the part behind the screen you were not looking at, the phone rang somewhere invisible and no notification was ever posted.
  • Fixed, Answer on the call notification answers the call. It used to only open the app, and taking the call was left to a background check that refused anything more than a few seconds old, so a call answered a moment late opened onto nothing and looked like it had dropped.
  • Fixed, A call the other person ends goes away here too. If their hang-up did not reach this phone, the call screen used to sit there offering to answer a call that was already over. It now notices when the audio stops, whatever the signalling says.

If you run your own relay

  • Nothing to do. No relay change is needed for this build.

android 0.14

A call that will not connect now tells you what is blocking it.

  • Changed, When a call will not go through because the other person's security keys changed, the app now says so where the call failed, and lets you deal with it there. It shows the safety number to compare, and it says what accepting the new keys commits you to. Before, it pointed you at the conversation and left you to find the same two choices yourself, which does not help at all if you were calling from the Calls tab or answering a notification.
  • Fixed, Moving between wi-fi and mobile data no longer costs a delay. A request carried over to the new connection was being read as a sign-in problem, so the app fetched a fresh credential it did not need before carrying on. During call setup that landed in front of the ringing.

If you run your own relay

  • Update the relay if you have not since 0.13. This build reads a reason the relay only started sending in that version; an older relay still works, just less quickly when a phone changes network.

android 0.13

The app stops asking the server the same question 500 times a minute.

  • Fixed, Messages and calls arrive as they happen, instead of waiting for the next check. The app asked the server for new mail twice a second and the server answered "nothing" every time, so anything that arrived in between sat there until the next ask. It now asks once and lets the server hold the question open until there is an answer, which is both faster and far easier on the battery.
  • Fixed, An incoming call says so when Android will not let it ring. Since Android 14 the permission a call needs to take over the screen is granted automatically only to apps the system already considers calling apps. Without it a call is demoted to an ordinary notification: about two seconds at the top of the screen, then gone, which looks exactly like a broken app. Notification settings now say what is missing and take you to the switch that fixes it.
  • Changed, Files can be sorted into areas you name yourself, and the names can be changed or forgotten later. Forgetting a name only forgets the name; anything already filed under it stays where it is.

If you run your own relay

  • Nothing to do. This build asks the relay to hold a request open, which every relay has always been able to do.

android 0.12

What a classification does, said where you choose one.

  • Changed, The classification picker explains itself. It says who can open a file, and says plainly that it does not decide where a file can be put: if you can read something, nothing here stops you filing it somewhere less protected. iPhone has carried that wording for a while and this screen said nothing at all.
  • Fixed, The on-device test suites can get past sign-up again. Two of them tapped a submit button that was disabled, which does nothing rather than failing, so every run died two minutes later blaming the wrong thing.

If you run your own relay

  • Nothing to do. No relay change is needed for this build.

android 0.11 relay

Messages that would not send, and a whole lot of Android catching up.

  • Fixed, Messages to someone who had reinstalled their app could fail with “Something went wrong reaching that server”, and the server was fine. Your phone was quietly refusing to send, because it could no longer confirm the other person's keys were the ones on public record. It can again, and messages go through.
  • Fixed, When your phone does refuse to send, it now says why. Before, anything it could not explain came out as a network error, which sent people off to check their signal for a decision the app had made.
  • Fixed, A photo you sent as a file kept the location it was taken. Photos sent the usual way never did. Both are stripped now, on every path.
  • Fixed, “Erase and start fresh”, offered when stored keys cannot be read, did not actually start fresh: it left the unreadable keys in place and came straight back to the same screen. It works now.
  • New, Reply to a particular message, so an answer that arrives an hour later still makes sense.
  • New, Files and Wallet have their own place in the bar, instead of being buried in your account.
  • New, Settings for notifications and for how the app looks, neither of which Android had.
  • New, You can report a story, which there was previously no way to do.
  • New, If a network blocks the app, you can now connect through a helper server, and hand the one you use to a contact who is stuck behind the same block.
  • Changed, A new look: one dark theme that shades from purple through blue into black, a new app icon, and text you can actually read on top of it.
  • Changed, The call screen is quieter: no boxed-in panel, no rings around the avatar.

If you run your own relay

  • The device directory now serves the account's address alongside its devices. Clients need it to check a published key against the transparency log on any send that does not open a new session; without it they compute the pre-address subject, match no leaf, and refuse to send. Update the relay before telling anyone to update their app.
